Literary Archetyeps Gilgmesh
Literary Archetypes
Hero: Gilamesh
He is the hero in the story because he fought many battles. He fought Humbaba with his best friend. He also fought the battle of immortality. Even though some of his ways are not right. Like sleepign with the girls and having his people build those walls year after year. He is still strong. He knows what he is doing and is confident that he will come out on top. He isn't afraid of dying. He only goes after immortaility beause he wants to bring Enkidu back to life.
Antihero:Gilgamesh
He is also Gilgamesh because he loses faith and hope throughout the story. He is so sure that he could kill Humbaba until he realizes what could really happen. One of the could die. He also loses hope after he goes talk to Utnapishtim. He realizes that he can't do anything in life to bring back his life. He is a great hero, but sometimes he he lacks those qualites and steps into the antihero.
Wise fool:Utnapishtim
He is a great character for this role. He was the one man that didn't want to be immortal. But because of that he ended up getting to be. Him and his wife live alone and is lonely. So many people travel to him to see to be immortal, but he tells him that being immortal isn't the funnies thing and should just go back and live life.
Devil:Ishtar
Ishtar is the Goddess of love, but also war. She gets so angry all the time and because of that hurts people around her. She was angry and the men when she wanted to bring the great flood. She was also angry at Gilgamesh for not being his wife that she sent down the Bull of Heaven killing three hunderd men and Enkidu. Whoever angers her gets the wrath of her.
The Outcast: Enkidu
At first he is alineated because he is half man half animal. He goes out and lives with the animals. Does everything they do. Drink, eat, and sleep. But when the boy and the man see what he is doing to help the animals they send the prostitute out to him. When he sleeps with her the animals leave him because of what he did. "When he rose again looking for his friends whohad gone, he felts a strange exhaustion, as if life had left his body. He felt their absence."(18) He knows that they left him because of what he does. He is ashamed of it. Before his last days he thinks back on his life and wish he would have never met Gilgamesh. That he was better of as an animal.
Double: Immortality
Immortality can be seen in two ways. A good thing and a bad thing. Gilgamesh thought of it as a good thing because he was wanting to bring back his best friend to life. He thought because he is part god and if his friend is immortal too that they will never part. The good reason. The bad thought is from Utnapishtim. He didn't want to be immortal. He wanted to die one day. But because he built the boat and did what the Gods asked him to do, he was granted with being immortal. He didn't want that. And everyone that asks him to be immortal he tries to change their mind.
Scapegoat: Enkidu
Enkidu is a victim because the gods say that one of them must die. Gilgamesh can't die because he is part god. Enkidu is always the victim because he never wanted these things. He didn't want to fight Humbaba and he didn't want to sleep with the prostitute. He was lured in by other people. People can't expect who he is. They aren't ready for what he has to bring. Being half man and half animal.
Temptress: The Prostitute
She is very beautiful and seductive. Everyone loves her. Because she is so beautiful Enkidu goes to her and sleeps with her. But because he slept with her he became man and all the animals left him. Also because of that he died because he killed the Bull of Heaven. She lured him into the dark side.
Good Mother: Ninsun
She is a great mother. She stands by her child with all his problems. She translate his dreams to what they really are. She also adopts Enkidu hopes that what she did will protect him when they are fighting. At the same time Siduri is probably a better mother that she is. She is the one that helps him along his rode to see Utnapishtim. She clothes him and baths him and feeds him. Does what a real mother should do.

Themes-Thebes Play
Proper Burial-
Antigone is about a girl who all she wants to do is to give her brother a proper burial like her other brother. She doesn't care that one brother was on the good side and the other one was on the bad side. He is her brother and he can never be replaced. She knows that death could come her way if she were to do it, but she doesn't care. She will take all the risks that will come out of it. After she does it and gets caught she realizes that she will die. But before Ceron, her uncle, the king, can come back and tell her that she won't be hang she has already hung herself in pride. She wants to honor her brother and do what she thinks is right.
Loyalty-
Antigone is loyal to her brother. Because he won't get a proper burial she goes against the law and fights for him. She does what she thinks is right even though she could get killed for it. Also there is loyal to Antigone and Teireias. He sticks up for her when Ceron tells him that he will die. He knows that it is wrong and he love her so. And after seeing her dying he too kills himself.
Intergiry-
This isn't one of the themes that we discussed, but it was on my test so i decieded to use it because I like it.
Odepius has great intergiry because he doesn't back down from his word after he finds out that he is the killer of the previous king. He takes it like a man and does what he said he would do. He goes away even though he could have easily write his word off and say that he didn't have to do it because he was the king. Creon had bad intergity because he didn't live up to his word. He said that anyone that buried Antigone's brother would be killed. At first you see him sticking to his word. But after him and his son, Teireias, talk he realizes that he could lose his son too and he doesn't want that. He decideds to change his mind, but it is too late. Antigone has died, Teireias has dies, and so has his mother. He lost everyone. Antigone has extreme intergity. She knew from the start what could happen to her if she gave her brother a proper burial. She didn't care. She was going to honor both of her brothers to the full extent. She knew she would die, but she didn't care. She had to much pride to let someone kill her so she did it herself.

Tragic Man- Hamlet
Belief in his own freedom-
Hamlet knows that he has no one in his live. Everyone that he cared about in his life backstabbed him. His uncle killing his father and marrying his mother. His mother letting his uncle swon her and marrying her uncle. Everyone has died except Horation. He knows that no will help him and he has to make his decsions on his own. He must face life that is ahead of him. And he is willing to accept that.
Supreme Pride-
You are drawn to him in the first page you read. This man has gone through so many struggles and you want to know about him. He thinks he is better than anyone else. He thinks he knows who should die and live. But he also respects God and the religion of other people
Capacity for Suffering-
He wants to help his father in killing Claudius, but he knows its wrong. He goes back and forth in the story if he should do it. He isn't insane in the beginning, but at the end of the book all the guilt builds up. He also has to lie to Ophelia to make sure he stays on track of killing Claudius. He is deeply hurt by it, but he knows he did the right thing. He isn't afraid of death. He knows what he has to do and if what he does do ends up himself being killed then so be it.
Sense of Commitment-
After he finds out that Claudius killed his father so he could be king and that the ghost is his father he makes a decision to kill Claudius. He makes a commitment to kill him. Even though he goes back and forth of it he knows it has to be done. He could just leave it alone and be happy for Claudis and his mother, but he knows that wouldn't be what his father wanted. And he wants to respect his father.
Bigorous Protest-
You see him go through so much pain right at the beginning of the story. His father is dead and he finds out that his uncle killed him. His mother marries him and then because of his pain his mother kills herself. Also, Ophelia kills herself, the one girl that he truly loved. He has to kill his uncle in order to respect his father's wishes, even though he doesn't like it. He wishes God would help him and tell him what to do and take a load off of him.
Transfiguration-
Hamlet understands that he has to take revenge on someone because of his father that he truly loves. He knows life pretty well. And has a good head on his shoulders about life. He knows that he has no one left and that he has to take life on his own. He is well respected towards the people and leaves a sense of pride and accolmplsihment.
Impact-
When he dies he leaves his story for Horatio to tell. Wanting him to tell everyone what really happen in the story. You finally see all the hurt that he went through to kill Claudius. Everyone in the play that is living is better understand what he went through to help out one of his love one. And reading this you understand him know and really get emotionally attached.
